Last night Sydney was complaining about a scary story she heard and how she couldn't get the images out of her head. I recommended that she use a pencil to erase the images or shred them up and throw them in the ocean and so on...
She said, "I better use an eraser so I don't waste any paper."

only if you bring back doughnuts!
Wednesday, February 3
This weekend Sydney had a friend sleep over, a first for both of the girls. They were sooo excited. First we went to Bingo for Books at school - what could be better than free books and root beer floats? The girls didn't get to sleep until about 9pm with all the excitement and the big kids playing downstairs. They even slept through the night until 5:50am that is. I found myself struggling to comprehend why two 5 year olds were asking me for the car keys. huh!?
girls: "We need the car keys - we left a book in the car and we neeeeed it. We can reach the keys, can we go get it?
me: It's not even light outside yet, no you can't go out to the car! Wait a minute let me think.... (I'm trying to remember while still half asleep - did we bring in the bag holding the very important Tinkerbell Color Wonder coloring book?)
girls: We really need that book, can we get it?
me: Wait ... I'm trying to think... (it's not happening very fast though) I think it's downstairs in the dining room in a black bag.
girls: but where?!
So I got up and found the black bag hiding in a dining room chair. Thank goodness I didn't have to go outside. I'm also thankful that those two smart and independent Kindergartners didn't attempt to go outside on their own (at least the car was parked in the garage and not on the street). Disaster averted!

Family Ties
Wednesday, April 8
One day Sydney was telling me about this white basket that two of her very good preschool friends have. They were both flower girls in a wedding. I informed her I could probably find her a white basket that would be just the same.
"But, noooooo - you have to be a flower girl!" Does she even know what a flower girl is?
Probably not.
Several weeks later Kevin and I were discussing a wedding invite that we would be unable to attend and here is the conversation that followed:
Syd: So I won't be able to be the flower girl?
Me: No honey, you'll have to wait for someone like Uncle Kenneth to get married. (You know, someone that she actually knows and is possibly related to.)
Syd: To who?
Me: We don't know yet.
Syd: I think, it's going to be grandma.
Kevin: Umm, you can't marry your own mom.
Syd: Well, I didn't know. . . . . she was his mom!
That girl will do anything for the white basket! I guess we need to work on the family tree thing. I'm pretty sure she knew Kenneth is my brother.

Molecules and more
Friday, June 19
For some reason Sydney has been really scared of goblins lately. It has really surprised me since this is the girl who has never been scared of anything before, besides bugs, flies, and bees. Last night I was trying to reassure her that there was no such thing as a real goblin.
Syd: Well, what if someone invents one?
Mom: People can't invent something that's alive, only machines and robots.
Syd: Are you sure?
Mom: Yes, but you can ask Dad about it in the morning.
Syd: Aww, but all he know about is molecules. Or, does he know everything?
Mom: Not everything, but a lot of things.
(Just in case you didn't know, Dad is a chemistry professor)

Just Mom, Please
Monday, May 11
Last night I was tucking the girls into bed and Sydney was begging me to stay a couple more minutes. I told her that if she would stop talking I would stay two more minutes.
"Yes sir-ee. I mean yes ma'am-ir-ee.", she said.
Hey, I resemble that remark!
Just call me mom, please.

Sweet Potato Love
Wednesday, March 25
Oh, it looks like a seal, I don't want to peel that one, let's peel one that looks not so seal-y.
Can we never peel this seal?
Is there a place that daddy has never ever gone in our house?
If you can't find it you can't peel it.
He has a yummy body.
Then, she accidentally dropped the sweet potato, I mean, seal right on his nose. She got a very sad face and actually started to cry.
Oh no, now he's cracked and we'll have to peel him.
Now he won't be a seal anymore.
He was so special and cute.
I want a real live seal for my birthday, we can get a blow-up pool for him.
Today I have returned the potato to the vegetable drawer and so far she seems to have forgotten about her seal. I wonder what will happen when we have leftovers?

Sweet Love
January 26
Last Friday night I was getting Sydney ready for bed after a whole day on the couch of eating nothing except some applesauce and an English muffin. Standing up made her dizzy, so as I carried her to the bathroom she looked up at me with this dreamy, adoring look in her eyes and said, "Mom, you smell like vanilla. Mmmm, I wish you were ice-cream . . . but if you were I wouldn't eat you 'cause I love you too much."
Wow, how sweet! If you knew how much she loves vanilla flavor and ice-cream then you'd really know how high I rate. I don't even think I could resist someone made of ice-cream. It probably helped that she had no appetite. Even though she was sick her sense of smell was not impaired, I had just used some vanilla-mint chapstick.
